High Prairie, Alberta

'Gateway to the Peace Oil Sands'

The Opportunity – Development of the Peace Oil Sands will further diversify the already strong resource-based  – agriculture, forestry, conventional oil and gas and tourism – economy in and around the Town of High Prairie.

"The residents and businesses of High Prairie are all very excited about developments which will be taking place in the Peace Oil Sands over the next number of years. As the gateway to Alberta's third largest oil sands resource, the High Prairie area is keen to participate and to further develop its service and supply capabilities – taking advantage of the proximity it has to the province's major energy sector supply hub in the Alberta Capital Region and also to the main Seal Lake deposit itself.

The recently completed Seal Lake Connector Road – via High Prairie – puts the Seal Lake deposit about an hour-and-a-half closer to Edmonton, a major logistical improvement in accessing and developing the resource. We're well-positioned, open for business, have a highly-motivated service and supply sector and local workforce, and look forward to being a big part of the environmentally-sustainable development of this resource in the years to come."

The workshop, community barbecue and reception – attended by over 400 participants, including Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach and Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahassen – brought together upstream producers and service and supply firms from across the Peace region to explore a range of regional business development opportunities related to development of the non-conventional oil sector in northwestern Alberta.
