About High Prairie
The
Town of High Prairie is located 365 km northwest of Edmonton on primary
Highway 2, and 209 km northeast of Grande Prairie, on a direct route to
both the Mackenzie and Alaska Highway systems. It is situated on 538
hectares at the west end of Lesser Slave Lake, within short distances
from three smaller lakes. Outdoor enthusiasts have celebrated the area’s
natural splendor by calling it “Big Lake Country”.
High Prairie is a short 20-minute drive from the western end of Lesser
Slave Lake; which is the largest lake entirely within Alberta’s
boundaries – 108 kilometers long by 19 kilometers wide (widest point).
World-class fishing takes place on Lesser Slave Lake (Walleye,
Northern Pike, Perch), with several winter and summer derbies held
annually.
